Carpet or Hard Wood?

by sladetanner on March 29, 2010

What type of flooring do you have in your home? Is it carpet, hard wood or tiles? There are pros and cons to each type.

PROS OF CARPET
1. Carpet is very comfortable under your feet. Walking on carpeting is nicer than walking over a hard surface.
2. In cold climates, carpet will keep your house warmer.
3. You can change your carpet more easily to change the color scheme of the room.

CONS OF CARPET
1. Carpet will wear, becoming shabby and unattractive.
2. Carpet needs cleaning, such as frequent vacuuming. When it becomes stained and very soiled, it usually requires a professional cleaning to bring back the beauty.
3. Carpet can retain dirt, odors and bacteria and stains easily.

PROS OF HARD WOOD
1. Hard wood floors are very attractive. A beautiful wood grain is something to be admired.
2. With proper care, hard wood floors can last for quite some time.
3. Hard wood floors are easy to clean. Spills can be wiped up without staining, and this type of flooring will not retain odors, dirt or bacteria.

CONS OF HARD WOOD
1. Hard wood flooring does take some maintenance. You may need to occasionally polish your flooring. And if it becomes scratched, repairs can be costly.
2. Hard wood floors are slippery when wet. You must be very careful of water or spills on the floor.
3. Hard wood flooring can be expensive.

PROS OF TILES
1. Tiles can be easily cleaned if they get dirty or something is spilled, and tiles will not retain bacteria.
2. You may very well be able to install your own tile flooring.
3. Tiles can be easily changed if you decide to redecorate.

CONS OF TILES
1. They can get dingy-looking fairly quickly.
2. In a cold climate, tiles will feel cold under your feet.
3. Dirt can get trapped in grooves.

If you have cheap carpet and intend to stick with it, carpet cleaners are readily available. Most of the time, vacuuming will do the trick. But when your carpet is more soiled, use a powder cleaner that will also deodorize when you vacuum. For heavily soiled carpets, you may want to rent a steam cleaner and save money by cleaning your carpets yourself.

Take the pros and cons into consideration, and then decide as to whether carpet, hard floors or tiles would be best in your home .
